Whit-O-Meter – Bayonetta
I suck at Bayonetta, and therefore in return, Bayonetta just plain sucks. Just kidding. Not really. Ok, I didn’t particularly like this game, despite all of the praise it has received from fanboys and other game review sites. If you’ve read my Darksiders review you know I’m not a big fan of these button-masher combo action games, even though this one teases you with some innovation. With this being said this game had me pulling my hair out in frustration, and this was on Normal difficulty. The combat instituted some cool features and at times was indeed fun, but I spent more times dying and staring at a loading screen (quite lengthy I might add) than I did pulling of cool combos.
The graphics were great and the character design and environments were beautiful, but the story was corny and left me with no real invested interest. Bayonetta was just a character I didn’t care about, there was no depth to her at all, and her journey just felt staged. Bayonetta relies or short witty comments, one liners, and a lot of suggestive poses to get her point across; I get it she’s a witch on a mission and she is somewhat of a badass. At no point did I feel like she was struggling through her journey or was tested whatsoever, despite the fact that I was getting my ass kicked left and right. Bayonetta casually strolls through each cut scene as if the battles were effortless. Again, maybe I just sucked too badly. In the end this game just wasn’t fun to me and the story made no attempts to salvage the game from its frustrating game-play elements.
